Why your link preview is wrong: an Open Graph checklist

When a link is pasted into a chat or a social feed, the app fetches the page and builds a preview from a handful of tags. If the preview shows the wrong title, an old image or nothing at all, the cause is almost always in the HTML the server returns, not in the app.

The tags that matter

The checklist

  1. The tags are in the HTML the server returns. Previews do not run JavaScript, so tags added by a script are invisible to them.
  2. og:image is an absolute URL to an image the crawler can fetch without logging in, ideally 1200 by 630 pixels.
  3. The canonical URL matches the page you share, so counts and previews are not split across duplicates.
  4. Each page has its own title and description, not the site-wide default.
  5. The page is not blocked in robots.txt for the crawler that builds the preview.

Reading what a page really sends

curl "https://api.ambolt.dev/v1/url-metadata?url=https://www.sitemaps.org/&free=1"
{
  "url": "https://www.sitemaps.org/",
  "ok": true,
  "status": 200,
  "title": "sitemaps.org - Home",
  "description": "The Sitemaps protocol enables webmasters to information earch engine about pages on their site that are available for crawling.",
  "language": "en",
  "canonical": null,
  "openGraph": {},
  "twitter": {},
  "favicon": "https://www.sitemaps.org/favicon.ico"
}

Recorded 2026-10-03; fields trimmed. An empty openGraph object and a null canonical tell you straight away what this page does not declare, which is exactly what a preview tool would see.

The call respects robots.txt, refuses private addresses and does not run JavaScript, the same as a link preview. Paste your own URL into the free Open Graph checker to test a page.

Try it free: Open Graph and link preview checker runs the same call in your browser (one free check per tool and IP address per day). API reference
