Questions
Does this check that the account exists?
No. It validates the number itself, which catches typing mistakes before a payment is attempted.
Which countries are supported?
All countries in the IBAN registry. For a country it does not know, only the checksum is checked and the answer says so.
Is the IBAN stored?
No. It is checked and discarded.
